Delete Your Account & Data

You have the right to request deletion of your SmartKwam account and all associated personal data at any time.

How to Delete Your Account

You can delete your SmartKwam account and all associated data using any of these methods:

Option 1: In-App Deletion

  1. Open the SmartKwam app
  2. Go to SettingsAccount
  3. Tap "Delete Account"
  4. Confirm your identity by entering your password
  5. Confirm the deletion

Option 2: Email Request

Send an email to privacy@smartkwam.co.za with the subject line "Account Deletion Request". Include the email address associated with your SmartKwam account.

We will verify your identity and process your request within 30 days in accordance with POPIA requirements.

What Gets Deleted

When you delete your SmartKwam account, the following data will be permanently removed:

  • Account information — your name, email address, profile photo, and password hash.
  • Device data — all connected devices, room assignments, and device configurations.
  • Automations and scenes — all automation rules, scenes, and schedules you created.
  • Usage history — device usage logs, energy monitoring data, and activity history.
  • App preferences — all settings, notification preferences, and customisations.
  • Family sharing data — your membership in any shared homes, including your role and permissions.

Important

Account deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. If you are the owner of a shared home, other members will lose access to that home. Please transfer ownership before deleting your account if you wish to preserve shared home access for others.

Data Retention After Deletion

After processing your deletion request:

  • Your personal data will be permanently deleted from our active systems within 30 days.
  • Encrypted backups containing your data will be overwritten within 90 days.
  • Anonymised, aggregated analytics data (which cannot identify you) may be retained for product improvement purposes.
  • Any data we are legally required to retain (e.g. for tax or legal compliance) will be kept for the minimum required period and then deleted.

Third-Party Device Data

Deleting your SmartKwam account removes your data from SmartKwam's systems only. Your smart home devices and their data stored on third-party platforms (such as Tuya Smart, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa) are not affected.

To delete data from third-party platforms, please consult their respective privacy policies and account settings.

Your Rights Under POPIA

Under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), you have the right to request the deletion of your personal information. This page serves as our mechanism for processing such requests, as required by Section 24 of POPIA.
